Updating your PlayStation 3 console is not only essential for enjoying the best user experience, both in video games and multimedia content playback, but sometimes it becomes mandatory if you want to play a specific video game.
Sometimes when inserting a disc into the PS3, a message appears on the TV screen indicating that to play that title, you must update the system. This is because the game requires some new feature or has an anti-copy system.
Despite being a console with almost 20 years of history, the latest software update that PlayStation 3 received is from March 5, 2025. In this latest update, the Blu-ray encryption key has been renewed, and reportedly, performance improvements have been made.
Keep in mind that to download the update, you will need a minimum of 200 MB of free space on your PS3's hard drive, and if you want to install the update via a USB memory or hard drive, it must also have that free space.
